Fish body midline segmentation using binary search

Body and caudal fin locomotion is ubiquitous in aquatic vertebrates, and kinematic models describing it are used in robotics, biomechanics and fisheries research. This paper presents a new algorithm to translate continuous body midlines of fish into a series of interconnected segments by identifying favorable joint positions along the body. The algorithm employs binary search to generate parsimonious kinematic models, aiming at minimizing the number of segments yet keeping approximation error below a user-defined threshold. To achieve this, the algorithm maximizes the length of each segment by determining the most distal joint position through repetitive shrinking of the search space. Theoretical and empirical analysis using two different datasets show that the binary search algorithm is substantially faster when compared to segment growing algorithm, which employs linear search to generate its models. There is four-fold improvement in computation time when generating models with less than 10 segments, which are typically sufficient to describe fish and fish-inspired robot movements. Furthermore, the multi-segment models generated by the binary search algorithm matched the ground truth models obtained through dynamic programming in over 97% of cases, and on average, contained one fewer segment than those produced by the Ramer–Douglas–Peucker algorithm, which is widely used in curvature simplification tasks. Our findings suggest that the binary search algorithm provides a computationally efficient approach for generating compact kinematic models and may facilitate the analysis of large datasets with high temporal and spatial resolution.

Seller strategies on eBay: Does size matter?

We examine seller tactics in 1177 eBay auctions. The largest volume sellers make rather homogeneous choices; smaller sellers are more heterogeneous. Some tactics, such as starting the auction with a ‘Buy it Now’ offer, appear to increase revenue. Perhaps due to intense competition, however, the overall impact of most tactics appears to be quite small. The main exception is the use of a secret reserve price, which raises the winning bid conditional on a sale, but reduces the probability of a sale. This can be advantageous, depending on the seller’s risk aversion and impatience.

MIMAR-Net: Multiscale Inception-based Manhattan Attention Residual Network and its application to underwater image super-resolution

In recent years, Single-Image Super-Resolution (SISR) has gained significant attention in the geoscience and remote sensing community for its potential to improve the resolution of low-quality underwater imagery. This paper introduces MIMAR-Net ( M ultiscale I nception-based M anhattan A ttention R esidual Network), a new deep learning architecture designed to increase the spatial resolution of input color images. MIMAR-Net integrates a multiscale inception module, cascaded residue learning, and advanced attention mechanisms, such as the MaSA layer, to capture both local and global contextual information effectively. By utilizing multiscale processing and advanced attention strategies, MIMAR-Net allows us to handle the complexities of underwater environments with precision and robustness. We evaluate the model on three popular underwater image datasets, namely UFO-120, USR-248, and EUVP, and perform extensive comparisons against state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results demonstrate that MIMAR-Net consistently outperforms existing approaches, achieving superior qualitative and quantitative improvements in image quality, making it a reliable solution for underwater image enhancement in various challenging scenarios.

LASER MICROPROBE **4**0Ar/**3**9Ar DATING OF MINERAL GRAINS IN SITU.

A laser-microprobe attached to a mass spectrometer for **4**0Ar/**3**9Ar age determination of single mineral grains in geological materials has been made operational at the US Geological Survey, Reston, VA. This microanalytical technique involves focusing a pulsed laser beam onto a sample contained in an ultra-high vacuum chamber attached to a rare-gas mass spectrometer. Argon in the neutron-irradiated sample is released by heating with the laser pulse and its isotopic composition is measured to yield an **4**0Ar/**3**9Ar age. Laser probe **4**0Ar/**3**9Ar ages of single mineral grains measured in situ can aid greatly in understanding the chronology of many geological situations where datable minerals are present but are not physically separable in quantities needed for conventional age dating.

Buy it now: A hybrid internet market institution

This paper analyzes seller choices and outcomes in approximately 700 Internet auctions of a relatively homogeneous good. The ‘Buy it Now’ option allows the seller to convert the auction into a posted price market. We use a structural model to control for the conduct of the auction as well as product and seller characteristics. In explaining seller choices, we find that the ‘Buy it Now’ option was used more often by sellers with higher ratings and offering fewer units; and posted prices were more prevalent for used items. In explaining auction outcomes, we find that auctions with a ‘Buy it Now’ price had higher winning bids, ceteris paribus, whether or not the auction ended with the ‘Buy it Now’ offer being accepted, possibly reflecting signaling or bounded rationality. We also find that posting prices, by combining ‘Buy it Now’ and an equal starting price, was an effective strategy for sellers in the sample.
