Water-resources appraisal of the south-Arkansas lignite area

The feasibility of developing lignite resources in south-central Arkansas is an important question at the present time (1978). Part of the concern is related to the possible impacts that mining and processing of lignite will have on water resources. Not only will the disturbance caused by excavating affect the quantity and quality of surface and ground water but, the mining, processing, and conversion processes will require the use and consumption of significant quantities of water. In order to assess the magnitude of the effects of strip mining upon both surface and ground water, baseline conditions (hydrologic conditions in the area prior to mining) must be well defined. A thorough data file and literature search was made so that baseline conditions in the area could be defined. In addition, data-collection networks have been established for the collection of quantitative and qualitative information on streamflow and water levels in the aquifers. Data collected to date at these sites are included in the report. Collection of data at these sites will continue through at least September 1979. Information presented in this report can be used to estimate the quantities of water available for use and the possible effects of mining and associated dewatering on water resources.

Water-resources investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in Arkansas, fiscal year 1981

During fiscal year 1981 there were 20 water-resources investigations in progress by the Arkansas District of the U. S. Geological Survey 's Water Resources Division. Investigations that mainly involved data collection included surface-water gaging, water-level measuring, water-quality sampling, sediment sampling, and water-use inventorying. Interpretive studies included three that were principally of ground-water resources, four that were of surface-water flow charateristics, four that were of surface-water quality characteristics, and three that were interdisciplinary.

Water-resources investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in Wyoming, fiscal year 1980

This report contains lists and location maps of streamflow and reservoir stations, ground-water stations, water-quality stations, sediment stations, and peak-flow partial-record stations that are currently being operated in Wyoming. Water-resources appraisal projects are also described, including many that are related to development of energy resources. The general locations of the projects are shown on maps. The U.S. Geological Survey is striving to coordinate its water-resources investigations with those of other agencies. This report is one phase of that coordination effort and serves as an annual progress report to cooperators and the public. (USGS)

U.S. Geological Survey reports on the water resources of Florida, 1886-1980

The U.S. Geological Survey has been making investigations of the water resources of Florida since the latter part of the 19th century. The earlier work consisted mainly of data collection at a few spring and river sites at intermittent intervals with the exception of a statewide ground-water study made during 1910-12 (Matson and Sanford, 1913). Since 1930, when an office was established for surface-water studies and in 1938 for ground-water studies in Florida, practically all of the water-resources investigations made by the U.S. Geological Survey have been in cooperation with state and local agencies. This second edition of "United States Geological Survey Reports on the Water Resources of Florida, 1886-1980" includes reports approved for release in calendar year 1980. In addition to updating the first edition (1980) several reports released prior to 1979, which were inadvertently omitted, have been added. The bibliographic list of publications which follows is arranged alphabetically by senior author. The publications are also indexed by geographic area and by subject. Only two lines are used for each publication in the indexes; thus the complete reference is given only in the bibliographic list.

Water-resources investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in Montana, October 1980 through September 1981

The report describes the investigative efforts of the U.S. Geological Survey toward the water resources of Montana. Hydrologic information and knowledge of the water resources are gained and disseminated principally by programs of (1) collecting hydrologic data on a continuing basis, (2) conducting water-resources appraisals of surface and ground water, (3) conducting supportive research in hydrology and related fields, (4) disseminating water data and results of investigations to the public, (5) coordinating acquisition of water data by Federal agencies, and (6) providing technical assistance in hydrologic fields to other government agencies. Current water-resources investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in North Dakota; fiscal year 1981

The U.S. Geological Survey, through its Water Resources Division, investigates the occurrence, quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of the surface and underground water that composes the Nation's water resources. This publication contains a brief description of the ongoing investigations of the North Dakota District. Much of the Geological Survey program is conducted in cooperation with several state agencies and other Federal agencies. The publications resulting from the program are listed periodically in a miscellaneous release titled, "Water Resources Investigations in North Dakota, 19xx." The last such release was issued in 1976. They are also listed in a monthly nationwide release titled, "New Publications of the Geological Survey, List xxx--Publications issued in month 19xx."

Bibliography of U.S. Geological Survey reports on the water resources of Florida, 1886-1982

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been making investigations of the water resources of Florida since the latter part of the 19th century. Early work consisted mainly of data collection at a few spring and river sites at intermittent intervals with the exception of a statewide groundwater study made during 1910-12. In 1930, an office was established for surface water studies in Florida and in 1938 for groundwater studies. Since 1930, practically all of the water resources investigations made by USGS have been in cooperation with State and local agencies. The third edition, ' Bibliography of U.S. Geological Survey Reports on the Water Resources of Florida, 1886-1982 ' includes reports approved for release in calendar years 1981 and 1982. In addition to updating the second edition (1981) several reports released prior to that time, which were inadvertently omitted, have been added. Water-resources investigations of the U.S. Geological Survey in Montana, October 1983 through September 1984

U.S. Geological Survey investigations of the water resources of Montana are described. The Montana district of the U.S. Geological Survey conducts its hydrologic work through a headquarters office in Helena, a subdistrict office in Billings, and field offices in Helena, Fort Peck, and Kalispell. The district employs 67 people to work on 25 funded projects that are organized under the general categories of data-collection programs, problem-oriented studies , a real appraisals, coal-related studies, research projects, and hydrologic studies and research performed under contracts to research organizations. This report describes the activities of the Water Resources Division in Mississippi. It summarizes progress made in water-resources investigations and related activities in the current fiscal year ending September 30, 1984, and outlines the work to be accomplished during the fiscal year ending September 30, 1985. Its specific purpose is to inform cooperating State, local, and other Federal agencies about all activities of this Division in water investigations in Mississippi and to give those cooperators a better understanding of how their participation fits into the total USGS program of water resources investigations. Water-resources data and the results of hydrologic investigations in Kansas are published or released by the U.S. Geological Survey, by cooperating State or Federal agencies, or by technical or scientific journals. This report lists more than 800 water-resources reports prepared by or in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey in Kansas for 1886 through 1983. The reports are listed by author, publication series, year of publication, and subject. The first water-resources investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey in Kansas was completed by A.C. Peale in 1886. The first cooperative program with a State agency was initiated 9 years later in 1895 and included the first stream-gaging stations operated by the Survey in western Kansas. The U.S. Geological Survey continues to investigate the occurrence, quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of surface and ground waters within the State. (USGS)

Water-resources activities of the U.S. Geological Survey in Kansas; fiscal years 1983 and 1984

The principal mission of the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, in Kansas is to investigate the occurrence, quantity, quality, distribution, and movement of surface and ground waters throughout the State. Primary activities include the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of hydrologic data, evaluation of water demands, and water-resources research. Hydrologic investigations are conducted through four basic types of projects: (1) data-collection programs, (2) local or areal investigations, (3) statewide or regional investigations, and (4) research projects. These projects are funded through cooperative agreements with State and local agencies, transfer of funds from other Federal agencies, and direct Federal funds. Fifty water-related projects were ongoing during fiscal years 1983 and 1984 in Kansas. This report describes for each of these water-resources activities the problem that initiated the study, the objectives of the project, and the approach designed to achieve these objectives. Information on data-collection stations in Kansas is presented in maps and tables. A list of the 40 reports approved for publication by the U.S. Geological Survey, its cooperators, or technical and scientific organizations during 1983 and 1984 is provided. (USGS)

Water-resources activities in New York, 1985-86

The U.S. Geologic Survey conducts water-resources investigations and hydrologic data collection in all states to provide the data and understanding needed for optimum use and management of the nation 's surface water and groundwater. This is achieved through jointly funded programs with state, county, municipal, and other Federal agencies. The Geological Survey conducted 37 water resources investigations in New York during 1985-86, several of which are continuous. This report describes each project in terms of problems, objectives, progress to date, and future plans and gives the period of funding, project chief, principal coordinating agency, field location, and completed reports. It also lists all reports resulting from the Survey 's water resources studies in New York during 1982-86. (USGS)

Activities of the Water Resources Division, California District, in the 1985 fiscal year

This report summarizes the progress of water-resources studies in California by the U.S. Geological Survey during the fiscal year 1985. Much of the work was done in cooperation with the State and local agencies. Additional supporting funds were transferred from other Federal agencies or appropriated directly to the Geological Survey. The water-resources program in California consisted of 55 projects. This report includes a brief discussion of each project and also contains a brief description of the origin of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Water Resources Division 's basic mission, and abbreviated organizational structure of the California District, sources of funding, and a summary of water conditions. Reports issued by the Geological Survey on studies completed fiscal years 1984 and 1985 also are listed. (USGS)
