Wildlife in a chemical world

Snapping turtles were collected by the Ohio State EPA from six locations in Ohio believed to have different contaminant concentrations. Previously we reported significant correlations among four hepatic microsomal dealkylases and CYP1A in these turtles. Herein we compare ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (EROD) and methoxyROD (MROD) to tissue contaminant concentrations. For Fifty-four of these turtles, muscle, fat body and liver tissues were assessed for PCBs and 20 organochlorine analytes and hepatic microsomal dealkylases. Of the contaminants analyzed, only DDE, dieldrin, oxychlordane, trans-nonachlor and PCB 1260 were detected in >25% of each sample type. When EROD and MROD activities were compared to tissue values for these contaminants, they were found to correlate significantly only to DDE, dieldrin and trans-nonachlor. For an 18 female subset of these turtles, serum PCBs and organochlorine pesticides, egg, fat body and liver dioxins and furans, and hepatic microsomal dealkylases were assessed. EROD and MROD both correlated significantly to serum PCB 105, PCB 138 and DDE, and to egg total PCBs. EROD and MROD did not correlate significantly with liver dioxins and furans, but there were significant correlations between EROD and egg and fat body dioxins and furans, and MROD and fat body dioxins and furans. It is expected that CYP1A-type inducers such as certain PCBs, and halogenated dioxins and furans, but not organochlorine pesticides, would be inducers in turtles. Presumably the correlation of monooxygenase with organochlorine pesticides is fortuitous, and toxic equivalencies are being calculated using a number of systems.

[Book review] Bird trapping and bird banding: A handbook for tapping methods all over the world

This book is a translation of a German edition published in 1978 by Die Neue Brehm-Bucherei, which in turn is a summary of four parts published earlier (1967-1970). Its main title, a direct translation of the German Vogelfang und Vogelberingung is misleading. Only six pages deal with matters one might usually expect in a book with "bird banding" as part of the title. This includes a single paragraph that admonishes against brightly colored clothing, one stating that binoculars are indispensable when checking trapping locations, and a half-page on dangers to the bander such as sinking in marshes and falling from ladders and cliffs. The remaining five pages deal with gathering cages or devices and with handling and releasing birds.

ESTIMATE OF WORLD HEAVY CRUDE OIL AND NATURAL BITUMEN RESOURCES.

The quantity of heavy hydrocarbons - heavy crude oil and natural bitumens - known or surmised to be present in the earth is large. The total is estimated to fall in the range of 5,879,712-5,942,139 million barrels. The portion of this that may ultimately prove recoverable is small, perhaps on the order of 500,000 million barrels of heavy crude oil and 200,000 million barrels of bitumen.

Hydrates contain vast store of world gas resources

The discovery of large gas hydrate accumulations on the North Slope of Alaska and off the U.S. southeast coast has heightened interest in gas hydrates as a possible energy resource of the future. However, significant geological uncertainties and possibly insurmountable technical issues need to be resolved before gas hydrates can be counted as a viable option for future, affordable supplies of natural gas.

Coalbed methane: Clean energy for the world

Coalbed methane (CBM) has the potential to emerge as a significant clean energy resource. It also has the potential to replace other diminishing hydrocarbon reserves. The latest developments in technologies and methodologies are playing a key role in harnessing this unconventional resource. Some of these developments include adaptations of existing technologies used in conventional oil and gas generations, while others include new applications designed specifically to address coal's unique properties. Completion techniques have been developed that cause less damage to the production mechanisms of coal seams, such as those occurring during cementing operations. Stimulation fluids have also been engineered specifically to enhance CBM production. Deep coal deposits that remain inaccessible by conventional mining operations offer CBM development opportunities.

Keeping Hawai’i’s forest birds one step ahead of avian diseases in a warming world: a focus on Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. A case study from the National Conservation and Training Center Structured Decision Making Workshop

This report is a product of a one-week workshop on using Structured Decision Making to identify and prioritize conservation actions to address the threat of climate change on Hawaii‟s native forest bird community. Specifically, t his report addresses the issue of global warming ‟s likely role in increasing disease prevalence in upper elevation forests of Hawaii, negatively impacting native bird populations susceptible to the disease but currently disease - free because of the cooler temperatures at high elevations.
