Brewer's sparrow (Spizella breweri)

Many of the known recoverable coal reserves in the Western United States occur within the breeding and wintering range of the Brewer's sparrow. Although the species is common throughout much of its breeding range, local and regional populations may be adversely affected due to mining-related disturbances and habitat loss. The species may serve as a valuable indicator of the impacts of surface-mining activities because it is restricted primarily to the sagebrush type during the breeding season and is known to be sensitive to habitat change. Recommendations for mitigating impacts focus on minimizing disturbance during the breeding season and re-establishing preferred native vegetation on mined sites. Monitoring populations on and adjacent to mine sites will give a better understanding of the effects of disturbance and the success of mitigation efforts.

Effects of oil on aquatic birds

There is some evidence of the impact of direct mortality from oil spills on bird populations, but very little is known about the sublethal and indirect effects of oil on birds. Research at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, Maryland, is directed at (1) determining the effects of petroleum on the physiology and reproductive success of birds, and (2) developing the analytical methodology necessary for detection of petroleum in avian tissues.

Coastal and Marine Bird Data Base

Summary: This report discusses the development of a coastal and marine bird data base at the Migratory Bird and Habitat Research Laboratory. The system is compared with other data bases, and suggestions for future development, such as possible adaptations for other taxonomic groups, are included. The data base is based on the Statistical Analysis System but includes extensions programmed in PL/I. The Appendix shows how the system evolved. Output examples are given for heron data and pelagic bird data which indicate the types of analyses that can be conducted and output figures. The Appendixes include a retrieval language user's guide and description of the retrieval process and listing of translator program.
