Decision-support systems for natural-hazards and land-management issues

Abstract

Scientists at the USGS Western Geographic Science Center are developing decision-support systems (DSSs) for natural-hazards and land-management issues. DSSs are interactive computer-based tools that use data and models to help identify and solve problems. These systems can provide crucial support to policymakers, planners, and communities for making better decisions about long-term natural hazards mitigation and land-use planning.

Global Fiducials Library

Introduction The Earth changes continuously in response to natural processes and human activity. The collection and interpretation of time-series imagery enhances our ability to observe and monitor Earth’s dynamic processes as well as study and understand the rapidly changing surface of our planet. The Global Fiducials Library (GFL) provides repeated satellite imagery of selected locations around the world to help scientists observe, document, and better understand those changes over time.
