Abstract

Urban growth and other land-use changes were examined in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Alluvial Floodplain ecoregions in Texas, along the U.S.-Mexico border. The analysis focused on understanding the types and causes of land change as well as the recovery of natural land-cover types between years 2001 and 2011. The purpose was to develop improved capabilities for understanding land change dynamics in urbanizing ecoregions and to provide data for further analyses. The spatial data, including metadata, allows further exploration and characterization of changes affecting this dynamic region.

High-resolution landscape-scale maps of nutrients, phytoplankton, and related water-quality constituents in Suisun Bay and the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, California, during 2018—Results from high-resolution underway surveys

We examined the abundance and distribution of nutrients and phytoplankton in the tidal aquatic environments of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta (Delta) and Suisun, Grizzly, and Honker Bays in California by completing three spatial surveys that used continuous underway high frequency (1 hertz) measurements and sampling onboard a high-speed boat. Surveys were conducted in May, July, and October 2018. Water was sampled continuously during surveys to simultaneously collect information about the concentration and spatial distribution of all major nutrient forms together with information about the major classes of phytoplankton and associated standard field measurements of water quality, such as dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic matter, pH, salinity, specific conductance, turbidity, and water temperature. The results show a greater than 50-fold variation in nutrient and phytoplankton concentrations across space and time, providing evidence of the dynamic environmental processes that shape the ways nutrients interact with and affect Delta aquatic habitats.

Creation of aerial camera system boresight installations in Bangor, Maine; Monroe, Louisiana; and Bassville Park, Florida

Aerial camera systems rely on boresights for defining internal and external metrics. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Migratory Bird Surveys Branch required boresights to calibrate their camera systems for creating georeferenced imagery that can then be used in geographic information systems. The U.S. Geological Survey created high-accuracy boresight installations in Bangor, Maine, in July 2024; Monroe, Louisiana, in September 2024; and Bassville Park, Florida, in January 2025 to provide this metric-defining capacity to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This U.S. Geological Survey Data Report details the methods and results of the boresight installation process and provides camera operators with the data needed to use each of the installations.

USGS Geochron—A database of geochronological and thermochronological dates and data—Technical documentation

Geochronological and thermochronological data are essential for constraining the timing and rates of geological processes, supporting geologic mapping, natural hazard assessment, and resource exploration. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geochron Database is a centralized, relational database that integrates USGS and State geological survey data in accordance with the National Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 and its reauthorizations. This report documents the structure and development of the database, including its standardized schema, controlled vocabularies, and protocols for compiling legacy and newly published data. The database is designed to adhere to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles and currently (2026) includes data from a wide range of geochronological and thermochronological methods. Public access is provided through the USGS Geochron Database Explorer, a browser-based geographic information system (GIS) interface, and through versioned data releases available on ScienceBase, which provide sample-level summary data and detailed analytical information. The USGS Geochron Database is structured to be extensible, supporting the inclusion of additional methods and data types as they are compiled. This format ensures long-term utility and aligns with the Mapping Act’s directive to create a national archive of geochronological information that adds interpretive value to geologic map data. Its design reflects a commitment to data transparency, scientific reproducibility, and national geoscience priorities.
