Yellowstone grizzly bear investigations: Annual report of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team 2018

Abstract

This annual report summarizes the results of grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos ) research and monitoring conducted in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) during 2018. The research and monitoring program is focused on population estimation and demographics, food monitoring, and habitat monitoring. The report also contains a summary of grizzly bear management actions to address conflict situations and agency outreach efforts. This report is a summary of annual data collections. Data analyses, and summaries presented in this report supersede those published previously and may be subject to change contingent on additional information, future manuscript publications, and the peer review process.

Strategic approach for bird restoration evaluation - FY 2025 annual report

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (hereafter “ spill ”) resulted in an estimated loss of 56,141–102,399 birds across 93 species along the U.S. Gulf of America coast. Injured species included those that nest locally along the northern Gulf of America coast as well as species that nest hundreds or thousands of kilometers outside of the region. The breadth of injury and the expansive geographic distribution of birds affected by the spill necessitated implementation of numerous and diverse projects designed to restore the injury of all affected bird species. As of September 2025, the Trustees, who are authorized to act on behalf of the public to restore injuries caused by the spill , have approved 39 projects, amounting to >60% of the total funds specifically allocated for bird restoration (i.e., Bird Restoration Type funding). Strategic allocation of remaining Bird Restoration Type funding is necessary to ensure that restoration of all injured bird species is achieved. An essential component of planning for future restoration is understanding the progress made from restoration actions conducted to date. The purpose of this project is to develop a plan that assesses the current restoration progress for each of the 93 injured species based on available data. The restoration assessment plan will be derived from a data gap analysis that identifies species for which data may be insufficient to assess restoration progress. This project will also allow Trustees to review and update the indicators of restoration success developed for injured bird species (e.g., population counts, reproduction metrics) that are used to evaluate restoration progress.

Prince William Sound Herring Program, fiscal year 2024

Pacific herring ( Clupea pallasii ) were collected from three sites in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska (Table 1) during the spring pre-spawn period from March 29 – April 1, 2024, to test for viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), viral erythrocytic necrosis (VEN), and Ichthyophonus prevalence (Table 1). Ichthyophonus was detected in 33% (59/180) of heart cultures from all sites combined. An inverted pattern of decreasing Ichthyophonus infection prevalence with size started around 2019 and continued through 2024 (Fig. 1). VHSV was isolated from one fish collected in Canoe Pass. The isolation was at a very low titer and was detectable only after blind passage. Neutralizing antibodies to VHSV were detected in 4.4% (14/318) of PWS herring in 2024 (Fig. 2). Erythrocytic inclusions indicative of VEN were not detected in any PWS herring (n =180) from 2024, but bacterial rods were noted in the blood films from three fish.
