Abstract

The croaking gourami, Trichopsis vittata, is documented from wetland habitats in southern Florida. This species was previously recorded from the same area over 15 years ago, but was considered extirpated. The rediscovery of a reproducing population of this species highlights the dearth of information available regarding the dozens of non-native fishes in Florida, as well as the need for additional research and monitoring.

Recent spread of introduced swamp eels (Percomorpha, Synbranchiformes, Synbranchidae) in Central Florida, USA, including first documented collections of cuchia, Ophichthys cuchia (Hamilton, 1822), in Florida

Swamp eels (Percomorpha, Synbranchiformes, Synbranchidae) were discovered in Florida in the 1990s and were considered established in the Greater Miami and Greater Tampa regions as early as 1997. We report detection of established populations of Sunda swamp eel, Monopterus javanensis Lacepède, 1800 and cuchia, Ophichthys cuchia (Hamilton, 1822) across multiple Orlando area watersheds in Central Florida. We report an additional occurrence of a single specimen of cuchia from Hillsboro Canal, Palm Beach County, Everglades drainage. Sampling was conducted from March 2023 through July 2025 in 52 Central Florida waterbodies, with emphasis on the middle and lower St. Johns River and the Upper Kissimmee River watersheds. Florida follows Louisiana and Texas as the third U.S. state between 2019 and 2023 to be found harboring established populations of cuchia. Live swamp eels, including both Sunda swamp eel and cuchia, have for decades been available for purchase at food markets throughout the United States, including Louisiana, Texas, and Florida. Ongoing trade in live swamp eels is likely leading to their introduction and establishment in the United States, with potential deleterious effects for aquatic ecosystems and human health.

The first occurrence of the Australian redclaw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens, 1868) in the contiguous United States

The Australian redclaw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus , is a popular aquaculture crayfish that has been introduced around the world. Here we report the first occurrence of the species in the United States in Lake Balboa, Los Angeles, California. The impacts of this species are largely unknown, and further research is needed to determine the species’ effects on native ecosystems. Sampling is needed to evaluate the population status in Lake Balboa to determine to what extent the species has spread in the greater Los Angeles River basin.

Identification of Acara (Cichlidae: Cichlasoma) established in Florida, USA

The Black Acara, Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Linnaeus, 1758), was first reported as introduced to Florida in 1965. Native to Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, western French Guiana, and northern Brazil, the species is now distributed throughout Florida’s southern peninsula. Examination of live and preserved acara from Central Florida, heretofore identified as Black Acara, reveal the presence of an additional acara species, the Chanchita, Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840). The Chanchita is native to Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, southern Brazil, and northeastern Argentina. Despite similarities, Black Acara and Chanchita can be distinguished by number of anal-fin spines, body and fin color, caudal-fin pattern, and head, nape, and upper-flank scale-rim pigment. The Chanchita is established in multiple Central Florida drainages with the earliest known record from July 27, 2000. The Chanchita has not been found to co-occur with the Black Acara. The presence of Chanchita in more than one Central Florida spring and the widespread distribution of this previously unreported introduced species may be of concern to natural resource managers.
