Applications of sequence stratigraphy to Pennsylvanian strata in the Illinois Basin

Abstract

Sequence stratigraphy concepts have been applied previously to the interpretation of Pennsylvanian strata in the Illinois Basin with the use of the 'cycle' by J.A. Udden in 1912 and the cyclothem by H. Wanless and J. Weller in 1932. The unconformity-bounded cyclothem was recognized in Pennsylvanian strata throughout the basin and is a small-scale version of the cratonic sequence of L.L. Sloss. Recent applications indicate that the transgressive-regressive unit, a genetic succession bounded by marine-flooding surfaces, is a more practical stratigraphic unit that has applications for stratigraphic control, structural control, sedimentology, and hydrostratigraphy. Transgressive-regressive units conveniently fit within a sequence stratigraphic framework.

Introduction: Paleozoic applications of sequence stratigraphy

Despite conceptual origins from studies of the Paleozoic strata of cratonic basins, sequence stratigraphy has largely been developed and applied to post-Paleozoic successions in extracratonic settings. The application of continental-margin sequence stratigraphic concepts to cratonic basinal successions is fraught with problems owing to slower rates of sediment accumulation, and consequently, a more coarsely defined temporal resolution. In addition, some important sequence stratigraphic components are rare or completely missing from cratonic areas. Common usage of genetic sequence stratigraphic terminology can coopt critical evaluation of depositional characters, and must be practiced with extreme caution in order to avoid 'model-driven' approaches to stratigraphic synthesis. The best available tests for evaluating current questions regarding the central role of eustasy in sequence stratigraphy may be through interregional and intercontinental comparisons of cratonic stratigraphic sequences.

Relative sea-level changes during Middle Ordovician through Mississippian deposition in the Iowa area, North American craton

The Tippecanoe and Kaskaskia cratonic megasequences in the Iowa area are subdivided into a succession of third-order transgressive-regressive (T-R) depositional cycles of ~1 to 3 m.y. duration. Cratonic deposition in the Iowa area is categorized into two broad-scale facies groupings, each dominated by shallowing-upward patterns: 1) an inner shelf with shallow subtidal to peritidal facies, and 2) a middle shelf dominated by subtidal facies. Relative changes in sea level, as documented in the cycles, are considered primarily to reflect eustatic patterns, but local variations in subsidence history and sedimentation rates complicate interpretations of the eustatic signal. Minor modification of certain sequence stratigraphic paradigms that were developed originally for continental margin settings is suggested for application to the Iowa cratonic cycles.

Silurian sequence stratigraphy in the North American craton, Great Lakes area

A notable circumstance of late Early through Late Silurian sedimentation on the Great Lakes area craton is that at least two and possibly three cycles of third-order duration (if eustatically considered) are recognized in basin and shallow-platform settings alike. Both virtually pure and siliciclastic-rich carbonate rocks exist in parts of platform-situated sections in contrast to siliciclastic-rich to evaporite-dominated basin sections. Knowledge of the reef history, together with evidence of incidental periodic incursions of siliciclastic sediments, permitted understanding of a regional event or sequence stratigraphy more than 15 years ago before conventional biostratigraphic and physical stratigraphic evidence became adequate to corroborate. This midwestern US and Ontario Silurian record has become strategic for testing different schools of thought that champion either tectonism or eustasy to explain cyclical sequences.
