Secretinite: A proposed new maceral of the inertinite maceral group

Abstract

The new maceral secritinite (name derived from the word ‘secretory’) is proposed for subcircular, ovoid, crescent-shaped or oblong, commonly round on one or more sides, noncellular, highly reflective components of the inertinite maceral group. This maceral of secretory origin, known from many bituminous coals throughout the world, has been confused with cellular, opaque fungal masses of high reflectance. It is suggested that these fungal masses be assigned to the previously proposed maceral funginite of the inertinite maceral group. The maceral term ‘sclerotinite’ and maceral-varietal terms ‘fungo-sclerotinite’ and ‘resinosclerotinite’ should be abandoned because they confuse the natural botanical relations and because they are unnecessary if the proposed maceral names, secretinite and funginite, are accepted. The maceral-varietal terms secreto-macrinite and secreto-inertodetrinite are proposed for angular to irregular constituents whose properties are physically gradational from secretinite into the macerals macrinite and inertodetrinite.

Neutron scattering reveals fractionation of natural gas mixtures in unconventional petroleum reservoir pores: Perspectives on energy resource recovery and storage

In unconventional petroleum reservoirs hydrocarbon fluids are hosted by both mineral and organic matter pores. These pores can have diameters that range from microns to less than a single nanometer and, for unconventional reservoirs, there is evidence that small pores ( <20 nm diameter) may constitute a large proportion of the available space. Understanding subsurface volumes and how fluids behave in them can be helpful for predicting hydrocarbon production and storage in the subsurface. One area with knowledge gaps regarding hydrocarbon behavior in small pores is the possibility for mixtures to fractionate (i.e., unmix) based on pore size or pore type. Mixture fractionation as a function of pore size could impact recovery of hydrocarbons, drive compositional shifts during production, and limit fluid storage within candidate reservoirs. To investigate natural gas fractionation in small geologic pores, we applied total neutron scattering to probe methane-ethane mixtures at reservoir pressures (up to ≈30 MPa) and temperature (60°C) within a sample from the Upper Cretaceous Niobrara Formation. Neutron scattering data reveal only minor fractionation occurs between methane and ethane in 20-nm diameter sample mesopores. Increased fractionation is observed for sample micropores, with up to 72% (±1% at 1-sigma) methane found in 2 nm diameter pores following injection of a 50%-50% methane-ethane mixture. These data provide rarely available direct experimental observations of hydrocarbon mixture behavior under nanoconfinement in a sample from an important unconventional petroleum reservoir. Our results are discussed in the context of evaluating hydrocarbon resources in unconventional reservoir meso- and micropores, reconciling observed gas composition changes during production, and more broadly, understanding subsurface pore volumes within an energy storage framework.

An integrated geochemical, spectroscopic, and petrographic approach to examining the producibility of hydrocarbons from liquids-rich unconventional formations

The geochemical and petrophysical complexity of source-rock reservoirs in liquids-rich unconventional (LRU) plays necessitates the implementation of a more expansive analytical protocol for initial play assessment. In this study, original samples from selected source-rock reservoirs in the USA and the UK were analyzed by 22 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (HF-NMR) T1-T2 mapping, followed by hydrous pyrolysis, and a modified Rock-Eval pyrolysis method (multi-heating step method-MHS). The above methods were complemented by organic petrography under reflected white and UV light excitation of the original and pyrolyzed samples. The analytical protocol presented attempts to better qualify and quantify different petroleum fractions (mobile, heavy hydrocarbons, viscous, solid bitumen), thus provide valuable and refined information about producibility of target intervals during appraisal. Results show how the hydrocarbon fractions interpreted from peak locations and intensities on NMR T1-T2 maps are in good agreement with those from MHS pyrolysis in terms of hydrocarbon mobility/producibility. Results from HP (Hydrous Pyrolysis) experiments show that an exception to this general agreement between NMR and MHS estimates occurs for the Kimmeridge Blackstone Clay samples, where MHS shows an increase of >90% in producible hydrocarbon yields vs. minimal to no presence of mobile hydrocarbons in NMR T1-T2 maps. This study clarifies the role of pore structure and networks in these discrepancies of producible oil estimates when comparing programmed pyrolysis to NMR-based techniques. This novel, multi-step and multidisciplinary approach provides a more advanced screening protocol for identifying zones of higher oil-in-place (OIP) and predicting fluid mobility prior to drilling or completions.

Investigating the effects of broad ion beam milling to sedimentary organic matter: Surface flattening or heat-induced aromatization and condensation?

Previous work has proposed transfer of kinetic heat energy from low-energy broad ion beam (BIB) milling causes thermal alteration of sedimentary organic matter, resulting in increases of organic matter reflectance. Whereas, other studies have suggested the organic matter reflectance increase from BIB milling is due to decreased surface roughness. To test if reflectance increases to sedimentary organic matter (vitrinite) caused by BIB milling were related to molecular aromatization and condensation, Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies were used to evaluate potential compositional changes in the same vitrinite locations pre- and post-BIB milling. The same locations also were examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine topographic changes caused by BIB milling (as quantified by the areal root-mean-square roughness parameter S q ). Samples consisted of four medium volatile bituminous coals. A non-aggressive BIB milling approach was used with conditions of 5 min, 4 keV, 15°incline, 360° rotation at 25 rpm and 100% focus (1.5 kV discharge; ∼100 μA). This gentle BIB milling caused vitrinite reflectance (VR o ) increases of 12 to 36% of the original values determined optically before milling (average 26% increase). When molecular proxies from FTIR (A- and C-factor, branching ratio) were plotted against each other for the same vitrinite locations pre- and post-milling, mean data points for each sample generally lie within error of a 1:1 line. Likewise, mean Raman thermal proxy [full-width half maximum of G-band (G-FWHM), Raman band separation (RBS) and D1/G band intensity ratio] values were similar for pre- and post-milled locations, also plotting within error of a 1:1 line. AFM confirms the majority (24 of 36) of pre- and post-ion milled surface pairs were smoother (lower S q values) after BIB milling. These results are interpreted to indicate VR o increase induced by the gentle BIB milling conditions used in this study is an effect of decreased diffuse reflectance due to flatter surfaces, causing more photons to reflect directly back to the detector. Little evidence was observed for molecular aromatization and condensation of vitrinite molecules following BIB milling (with the conditions used). The presence of milling-induced artifacts, including differential milling effects dependent on location and the development of self-organized patterned structures, indicate much work remains in standardization of BIB milling before its promulgation as a routine sample preparation technique for organic petrography. These results provide better understanding of anthropogenic-induced changes to geological samples caused by the now widespread adoption of BIB milling as a disruptive innovation in sample preparation.
