An evaluation of regression methods to estimate nutritional condition of canvasbacks and other water birds

Abstract

Regression equations that use mensural data to estimate body condition have been developed for several water birds. These equations often have been based on data that represent different sexes, age classes, or seasons, without being adequately tested for intergroup differences. We used proximate carcass analysis of 538 adult and juvenile canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria ) collected during fall migration, winter, and spring migrations in 1975-76 and 1982-85 to test regression methods for estimating body condition.

Rainbow smelt - larval lake herring interactions: competitors or casual acquaintances?

We examined the hypothesis that competition for food between rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) and larval lake herring (Coregonus artedi) was a cause for the declines of lake herring stocks in Lake Superior. We studied the diet of larval lake herring and of larval, juvenile, and adult rainbow smelt during 1974 in Black Bay, Ontario, where both species were abundant, and in the Apostle Islands Region, Wisconsin, where rainbow smelt was abundant but lake herring was scarce. No evidence of competition for food was found between larval lake herring and rainbow smelt. Spawning and hatching times of the two species were separate enough that most larvae of the two species did not occupy the study areas simultaneously. Juvenile and adult rainbow smelt were found with lake herring larvae, but their diets differed. Therefore, we concluded that rainbow smelt did not compete with lake herring larvae for food and that competition for food between rainbow smelt and lake herring larvae was not the factor that caused lake herring population declines in Lake Superior.

Instream flows to assist the recovery of endangered fishes of the upper Colorado River basin

The riverine landscape of the upper Colorado River basin has been extensively modified by dams, diversions, revetments, and water abstractions. These changes, probably coupled with the introduction of many nonnative fishes, have compromised the existence of four of the native fishes (Colorado River squawfish Ptychocheilus lucius, humpback chub Gila cypha, bonytail chub Gila elegans, and razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus) of the river system. Efforts to recover these endangered fishes have emphasized reregulation of flows to provide better habitat conditions than existed during the last half century, when ranges and abundances of the fishes declined significantly. Contention emerged, however, with regard to the efficacy of methods used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to justify flow recommendations to protect the endangered fishes. The purpose of this study was to review the science pertaining to the issue of flow provision, to identify critical uncertainties, and to provide recommendations for determining the instream flow needs of the endangered fishes.

A model of the productivity of the northern pintail

We adapted a stochastic computer model to simulate productivity of the northern pintail (Anas acuta). Researchers at the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service originally developed the model to simulate productivity of the mallard (A. platyrhynchos). We obtained data and descriptive information on the breeding biology of pintails from a literature review and from discussions with waterfowl biologists. All biological parameters in the productivity component of the mallard model (e.g, initial body weights, weight loss during laying and incubation, incubation time, clutch size, nest site selection characteristics) were compared with data on pintails and adjusted accordingly. The function in the mallard model that predicts nest initiation in response to pond conditions adequately mimicked pintail behavior and did not require adjustment.Recruitment rate was most sensitive to variations in parameters that control nest success, seasonal duckling survival rate, and yearling and adult body weight. We simulated upland and wetland habitat conditions in central North Dakota and compared simulation results with observed data. Simulated numbers were not significantly different from observed numbers of successful nests during wet, average, and dry wetland conditions. The simulated effect of predator barrier fencing in a study area in central North Dakota increased recruitment rate by an average of 18.4%. This modeling synthesized existing knowledge on the breeding biology of the northern pintail, identified necessary research, and furnished a useful tool for the examination and comparison of various management options.
