Survival of female wood ducks during brood rearing in Mississippi and Alabama

Knowledge of survival of female ducks is important for understanding population dynamics and managing hunted species. We estimated survival of female wood ducks ( Aix sponsa ) during brood rearing in different wetland environments in Mississippi (1996-1999) and Alabama (1998-1999). Survival was 0.90 ± 0.05 (Ŝ ± SE) in Mississippi and 0.92 ± 0.07 in Alabama. A composite estimate of female survival for all years and both areas was 0.90 ± 0.04. High survival of females during brood rearing in our study areas suggests that this factor may be less important than other population factors (e.g., duckling survival) influencing fall recruitment in these wood duck populations.

Binary coefficients and clustering in biostratigraphy

The large data arrays common in biostratigraphy make subjective groupings difficult. Because of this, biostratigraphers have commonly based conclusions on the occurrences of relatively few species. The use of binary similarity coefficients, cluster analysis techniques, and digital computers allows a polythetic approach to biostratigraphy. The approach is free of circular and a priori reasoning in that it is established that assemblage zones (major clusters in a dendrogram) are present before the biostratigraphic utility of various taxa for the recognition of the zones is determined. A measure for determining the biostratigraphic fidelity of a species for established zones is proposed. Published data on the distribution of ostracodes and foraminifers from the Eocene and Oligocene of Mississippi and Alabama are used to demonstrate a method of using coefficients and clustering in establishing a zonation.

Summary of the Midway and Wilcox stratigraphy of Alabama and Mississippi

This study of the stratigraphy of the Midway and Wilcox groups of Alabama and Mississippi was part of the extensive bauxite investigations carried on by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of 'lines of the United States Department of the Interior in 19112 and 1943. The stratigraphic study was undertaken to determine in what formation or formations the bauxite deposits occur, under what paleogeographic conditions the bauxite-bearing formations were deposited, and when and under what conditions the bauxite was formed.
