Report of the U.S. Geological Survey's analytical evaluation program; standard reference water samples M-82 (major constituents), T-83 (trace constituents), N-8 (nutrients), and P-2 (precipitation snowmelt)

The U.S. Geological Survey began an interlaboratory testing program of reference water samples in 1962. Principal purposes of the program are to provide a means for participating water laboratories to: (1) identify analytical problem areas; (2) ascertain the accuracy and precision of common water analyses and analytical methods and; (3) provide reference samples for continuing quality assurance testing. Participation in this continuing quality assurance program is mandatory for all domestic laboratories providing water analysis data for Survey use. Analytical data submitted by the participating laboratories that analyzed the respective reference samples distributed in October 1982 are presented. Relative performance ratings achieved by the laboratories for each determination and statistical evaluation of the data are given in 14 tables. (Author 's abstract)

A rapid method for the determination of radioactive cesium isotopes in water

Radioactive cesium in water is concentrated by ion-exchange on finely divided ammonium hexacyanocobalt ferrate (NCFC), and then determined by beta counting. No carrier is added, and the method can be used to determine beta-emitting cesium isotopes at the 10-pCi/l level using a 100-ml sample. Five samples can be prepared for counting, in approximately 3 hours, and the method is applicable to fresh and saline waters.

Radiochemical analyses of surface water from U.S. Geological Survey hydrologic bench-mark stations

The U.S. Geological Survey's program for collecting and analyzing surface-water samples for radiochemical constituents at hydrologic bench-mark stations is described. Analytical methods used during the study are described briefly and data obtained from 55 of the network stations in the United States during the period from 1967 to 1971 are given in tabular form. Concentration values are reported for dissolved uranium, radium, gross alpha and gross beta radioactivity. Values are also given for suspended gross alpha radioactivity in terms of natural uranium. Suspended gross beta radioactivity is expressed both as the equilibrium mixture of strontium-90/yttrium-90 and as cesium-137. Other physical parameters reported which describe the samples include the concentrations of dissolved and suspended solids, the water temperature and stream discharge at the time of the sample collection.
