National Research Program of the Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, Fiscal Year 1993

INTRODUCTION This report, one in a series of annual reports, provides current information about the National Research Program (NRP) of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Resources Division (WRD) during fiscal year 1993. Organized by NRP's six research disciplines, the volume contains a summary of the problem, objective, approach, and progress for each project that was active during fiscal year 1993. It also contains bibliographic information that, because of the long-term nature of the program, covers a 5-year period. The bibliographic information does not include abstracts or informal reports. Rather it contains those reports that are readily available in the form of journal articles, USGS publications, book chapters, or books.

National Research Program of the Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey: Fiscal Year 1988

The National Research Program (NRP) of the US Geological Survey 's Water Resources Division (WRD) had its beginnings in the late 1950 's when ' core research ' was added as a line item to the Congressional budget. Since that time, the NRP has grown to encompass a broad spectrum of scientific investigations. The sciences of hydrology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, ecology, biology, geology, and engineering are used to gain a fundamental understanding of the processes that affect the availability, movement, and quality of the Nation 's water resources. The NRP is located principally in Reston, VA, Denver, CO, and Menlo Park , CA. The NRP is subdivided into six disciplines as follows: (1) Ecology; (2) Geomorphology and Sediment Transport; (3) Groundwater Chemistry; (4) Groundwater Hydrology; (5) Surface Water Chemistry; and (6) Surface Water Hydrology. The report provides current information about the NRP on an annual basis. Organized by the six research disciplines, the volume contains a summary of the problem, objective, approach, and progress for each project that was active during fiscal year 1988.

Quality assurance practices for the chemical and biological analyses of water and fluvial sediments

This chapter contains practices used by the U.S. Geological Survey to assure the quality of analytical data for water, fluvial sediment, and aquatic organisms. These practices are directed primarily toward personnel making water quality measurements. Some detail specific quality control techniques, others document quality assurance procedures being used by the Central Laboratories System of the U.S. Geological Survey, and still others describe various statistical techniques and give examples of their use in evaluating and assuring the quality of analytical data. The practices are arranged into eight sections: Analytical Methods Development Procedures, Standard Quantitative Analysis Techniques, Instrumental Techniques, Reference Material, Laboratory Quality Control; Quality Assurance Monitoring; Documentation, Summary, and Evaluation of Data, Materials Evaluation. Each section is preceded by a brief description of the material covered. Similarly within each section, each practice is preceded by a description of its application or scope.

1978 Water Quality Laboratory services catalog

The information in this catalog is provided to assist field personnel in the selection of determinations, the estimation of costs, the calculation of sample volume requirements, the identification of the necessary sample treatment and in the evaluation of the precision of the laboratory data. The major section of the catalog is the table of determinations which includes the cost, required sample volume, sample treatment, and precision. This table is divided into three sections: Inorganic determinations, organic determinations, and biological determinations. The "Inorganic determinations" are subdivided into major ions, major nutrients, trace constituents, physical parameters, and radiochemical measurements. The "Organic determinations" are subdivided into gross measures, pesticides, and munition products. The "Biological determinations" are subdivided into gross measures, periphyton, phytoplankton and benthic invertebrates. Regardless of the outline form attempted, exceptions and gray areas were encountered. Generally, exceptions were placed into the groups based on a sample designation. As a result, frequent use of the index may be required until users become familiar with the catalog.
