Lode gold and silver occurrences in Alaska

The following references give data, as of September 1, 1981, on localities where lode gold or silver has been found and are keyed to locations shown on the accompanying map. An asterisk (*) preceding a locality name indicates recorded production. In most instances the report(s) cited for each occurrence is a summary of data in older reports and was compiled since 1975. Most of the summary reports contain lists of the reports used in their compilation. Citations are in standard bibliographic format with the exception that each includes, in parentheses, an abbreviation for the report series and the number of the report. Abbreviations are: AOF, State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys Open-File Report; B, U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin; BMOF, U.S. Bureau of Mines Open-File Report; MF, U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map; OF, U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report.

Summaries of data on and lists of references to metallic and selected nonmetallic mineral deposits in the Nabesna Quadrangle, Alaska

These summaries of data on metallic and selected nonmetallic mineral occurrences and lists of selected references to them in Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, and State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (and predecessor State and Territorial agencies) reports and maps and in one Geological Survey of Canada report are designed to aid in library research on the mineral resources of the Nabesna quadrangle, Alaska. The references listed are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. The cut-off date for reports and maps cited in this report is December 31, 1979. Data on claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, most of the localities on p. 53 in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77169A)) are not included. These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present. Geochemical anomalies determined by analyses of rock and stream-sediment samples in which no metallic mineral was identified are also omitted. This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of data and reference lists arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a second section that lists synonyms for names in the first section, the names of owners and operators of mines and prospects, and claim names; and a final section that lists alphabetically by author all references mentioned in the first section and in these introductory paragraphs.

Summary of references to mineral occurrences (other than mineral fuels and construction materials) in the Fairbanks Quadrangle, Alaska

For each mineral occurrence there is a page that gives the name of the occurrence; the mineral commodities present (listed alphabetically for metallic commodities and then for nonmetallic commodities); the mining district (Ransome and Kerns, 1954) in which the occurrence is located; the name of the 1:250,000-scale topographic quadrangle (Fairbanks); coordinates (as described by Cobb and Kachadoorian, 1961, p. 3-4); the metallic mineral resources map number (KF-410) and the occurrence number on that map if the occurrence is shown; and the latitude and longitude of the occurrence. These data, presented at the top of the page, are followed by a short, general summary of the published information on the occurrence. This is followed (continued on additional pages, if necessary) by more detailed summaries, arranged chronologically, of all references to the occurrence. Material in brackets is interpretive or explanatory and is not in the summarized reference.

Selected U.S. Bureau of Mines reports on Alaska indexed by quadrangle

Most U.S. Bureau of Mines reports on the geology and mineral resources of Alaska that were published or placed in open files through April 30, 1974, are listed by the quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) into which Alaska has been divided for topographic mapping (p. 2). References to reports that deal with Alaska as a whole and cannot be readily assigned to individual quadrangles or deal with many scattered parts of the state are listed under ALASKA - GENERAL, which appears before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings. References to the Minerals Yearbook, published annually, are not included as this periodical contains mainly statistical data. Also omitted are reports on mining, milling, and metallurgical practices; compilations of coal, oil, and gas analyses unless data on geological occurrences are also given; and reports on permissible explosives, health, and safety. This index is the second in a planned series of specialized lists, arranged by quadrangle, that will facilitate library research on the geology and mineral resources of Alaska. The first in the series is "Geological Survey open-file reports on Alaska indexed by quadrangle," by Edward H. Cobb, which was released as open-file report 74-7 on May 16, 1974.

Geological Survey published maps (other than topographic maps) of Alaska indexed by quadrangle

Geological Survey maps (other than topographic maps) the publication of which was announced before February, 1974, are listed by the quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) into which Alaska has been divided for topographic mapping (p. 2). This index does not include maps that were placed in open files but not formally published, as such maps are listed in another report. References to maps of Alaska as a whole or of offshore areas that are not within quadrangle boundaries are listed under ALASKA - GENERAL, which appears before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings.

Index of metallic mineral deposits of Alaska compiled from reports in open files of the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Mines through 1972

This index supplements a similar index of published reports (Cobb, 1973) currently being processed for formal publication. Inasmuch as many open-file reports are preliminary and eventually superseded by final published reports, it is inappropriate to include references to open-file reports in a permanent index. As most preliminary reports are of immediate, although temporary, value, it is desirable that references to them be compiled and made available for general use through the medium of open-file release. This index is designed to fill that need.
