Denali image map

The Denali National Park and Preserve 1:250,000-scale image map has been prepared and published as part of the US Geological Survey's (USGS) continuing research to improve image mapping techniques. Nine multispectral scanner (MSS) images were geometrically corrected, digitally mosaicked, and enhanced at the National Mapping Division's (NMD) EROS Data Center (EDC). This process involves ground control and digital resampling to the Universal Tranverse Mercator (UTM) projection. This paper specifically discusses the preparation of the digital mosaic and the production peculiarities associated with the Denali National Park and Preserve image map.

Digital processing techniques and film density calibration for printing image data

Satellite image data that cover a wide range of environments are being used to make prints that represent a map type product. If a wide distribution of these products is desired, they are printed using lithographic rather than photographic procedures to reduce the cost per print. Problems are encountered in the photo lab if the film products to be used for lithographic printing have the same density range and density curve characteristics as the film used for photographic printing. A method is presented that keeps the film densities within the 1.1 range required for lithographic printing, but generates film products with contrast similar to that in photographic film for the majority of data (80 percent). Also, spatial filters can be used to enhance local detail in dark and bright regions, as well as to sharpen the final image product using edge enhancement techniques.

Digital to Analog Conversion and Visual Evaluation of Thematic Mapper Data

As a part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Landsat D Image Data Quality Analysis Program, the Earth Resources Observation Systems Data Center (EDC) developed procedures to optimize the visual information content of Thematic Mapper data and evaluate the resulting photographic products by visual interpretation. A digital-to-analog transfer function was developed which would properly place the digital values on the most useable portion of a film response curve. Individual black-and-white transparencies generated using the resulting look-up tables were utilized in the production of color-composite images with varying band combinations. Four experienced photointerpreters ranked 2-cm-diameter (0. 75 inch) chips of selected image features of each band combination for ease of interpretability. A nonparametric rank-order test determined the significance of interpreter preference for the band combinations.
